Professor Simon Mitchell MB ChB, PhD, DipAdvDHM (ANZCA), FUHM, FANZCA

Simon works as an anaesthesiologist at Auckland City Hospital and is Professor of Anaesthesiology at the University of Auckland. He provides on-call cover for the diving emergency service in New Zealand. He is widely published with two books and over 170 scientific journal papers or book chapters. He co-authored the hyperbaric and diving medicine chapter for the last four editions of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine. He has been Editor-in-Chief of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Journal since 2019. He has twice been Vice President of the UHMS and in 2010 received the society’s Behnke Award for contributions to the science of diving.

Simon has a long career in sport, scientific, commercial, and military diving. He was first to dive and identify three historically significant deep shipwrecks in Australia and New Zealand, including one in 2002 which was the deepest wreck dive undertaken at the time. He was conferred Fellowship of the Explorers’ Club of New York in 2006, and was the Rolex Diver of the Year in 2015. His most recent expeditions were the Pearse Resurgence cave exploration (New Zealand) in February 2020 and February 2023, a project to take arterial blood gas specimens from an elite freediver at 60m in January 2021, and hunting for a shipwreck in the sub-Antarctic in February 2022.

Diving Medic supporting diving operations (military / commercial)

Hyperbaric Medical Attendant working in a clinical hyperbaric service

A Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the course.

Course Description:

Attended a Level IID Refresher course within last 5 years.

Description:
This workshop aims to increase safety awareness among hyperbaric chamber operator & attendant to ensure safe working practice. The emphasis will be on having the alertness & knowledge to identify potential risk and having an action plan to deal with it. It would also be a suitable workshop for doctors in charge of the technical and safety aspects of a hyperbaric unit. Included in the workshop is a site visit to a nearby hyperbaric chamber for practical / real world insights.

This workshop is suitable for both doctors and non-doctors (nurses, medical assistants, paramedics). It will include updates and latest best practices on wound care, covering both theory and practical aspects of modern wound care. There will also be lectures on clinical hyperbaric updates.

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) has various connections locally and internationally. As of January 2023, direct international flights include from Singapore, Brunei, Incheon & Busan, Manila, Bangkok, Taipei, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
